James Hardie Bathroom Remodeling: The Fort Worth Owner’s Guide

James Hardie bathroom remodeling in Fort Worth typically runs $9,000 to $28,000 installed, and we stock HardieBacker cement board, HardiePanel, and related substrates on our trucks so most tear-out and replacement work starts the same week. Homeowners usually discover the problem the same way: grout lines cracking along the tub flange, tile popping loose near the floor, or a soft spot behind the vanity that reads as moisture damage. That’s almost always a failed substrate, not a failed tile. The tile was never the problem. What’s behind it was.

Bradford Remodeling Co Fort Worth is an independent service provider. We are not affiliated with James Hardie, but we’ve installed their board systems in Fort Worth bathrooms for years because the product stays flat, holds fasteners, and doesn’t swell like gypsum-based board when North Texas humidity does what it does. Curtis Lane has seen enough failed green board in his two decades of swinging hammers to know that saving forty dollars on substrate costs four thousand in tear-out later.

Which James Hardie Models This Applies To

In bathrooms, we’re almost always working with HardieBacker 500 cement board in both 1/4-inch and 1/2-inch thicknesses, or HardieBacker 800 for floors. The gotcha most Fort Worth homeowners don’t know: HardieBacker is not waterproof. It is water resistant. If your installer skipped a moisture barrier behind the board, or didn’t tape and mud the seams with a polymer-modified thinset, water migrates through the grout and wicks into the framing. The board itself won’t rot, but the studs behind it will.

Identifying what you have takes thirty seconds. Peel back a fixture escutcheon or remove an outlet cover. If the board behind the tile is gray with visible fiber reinforcement and a slightly gritty surface, you’re looking at cement board. HardieBacker runs a true 3-by-5-foot sheet in the 500 series, which matters because some aftermarket boards use 32-inch widths that change stud layout. We match OEM HardieBacker sheet-form panel, not the cheaper knock-offs that sag under large-format tile.

Signs Your James Hardie Bathroom Remodeling Is Failing

  • Grout cracking along the tub or shower flange within two years. The substrate is flexing. Either the board was not bedded in thinset over the studs, or fasteners were overdriven and the board is floating.
  • Loose or hollow-sounding tile near the floor line. Water has been wicking up through the bottom course. In Fort Worth slab-on-grade homes, this is common when the board was run all the way to the slab instead of leaving a 1/4-inch gap and sealing the base with silicone.
  • Dark staining or efflorescence bleeding through grout. That white crusty deposit is mineral salts carried by water migrating through the wall cavity. The board is saturated and drying back out, over and over.
  • Soft baseboard or bubbling paint on the room side of a shower wall. Moisture has moved through the board and into the drywall or trim. If you can push a fingernail into the baseboard, the wall behind it is done.
  • Musty smell that returns within days of cleaning. Mold is growing somewhere you cannot see, usually inside a stud bay fed by a slow leak behind the substrate. Bleach will not reach it.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

A remodeled primary bathroom with a soaking tub and walk-in shower

A full James Hardie-based bathroom remodel in Fort Worth runs $9,000 to $28,000, depending on footprint, whether the tub stays or becomes a walk-in shower, and how far the moisture damage has traveled into the framing once we open the wall. The low end covers a small guest bath with new HardieBacker, tile, and a tub surround. The high end gets you a primary bath gut, custom tile, double vanity with Cambria or Silestone tops, and a Kohler or Moen rough-in update.

What moves the number most is hidden rot. We won’t know the framing condition until the old board comes off. That’s why our written price separates what we know from what we’ll document if we find it. You get a line-item scope before we start, and if we open a wall and find stud damage, we show you photos and a change-order price before touching another stud. No numbers move at the door. That’s The Garrison Standard.

Every project carries the 365-Day Done Right Promise. If the tile, board, or workmanship fails within one year, we return and correct it at no charge. The guarantee is in writing, in your hand, on the day we close the job out.

Tearing out and reinstalling cement board is not electrically dangerous or high-tension, but a bad substrate job on a shower wall is a slow-burn failure that hides for years. The cuts throw silica dust that demands a fitted respirator, not a paper mask. The seams need to be taped with alkaline-resistant mesh tape and thinset, yet the panels still need expansion gaps at every change of plane. Skip either one and you’ll rebuild the job twice.

What you can do safely: pull the escutcheon and look for the board type, check grout for cracks, and mark any soft drywall with painter’s tape so we know where to investigate. What you should not do: open a shower wall yourself and try to patch cement board around a tub flange. If the vapor barrier is torn behind your patch, you’ve made the leak slower and the damage worse. Call (682) 204-4897 and we’ll tear it out, document everything, and write you a price you can hand to a banker.
